Zuckerberg: No Facebook phone operating system

Facebook is not developing a cellphone operating system, CEO Mark Zuckerberg told TechCrunch.

The social networking giant isn't developing phone hardware either, Zuckerberg said. He was responding to TechCrunch's earlier report that the company has a "Facebook phone" in the works.

But Zuckerberg did not deny that Facebook was experimenting with other kinds of cellphone software. He referred to programs that were an "integration into an operating system." That would be a step above the Facebook apps out today, which run as separate little programs apart from a phone's core functions.

A phone with more integrated Facebook software might automatically link the phone's contact list with the user's Facebook page, and offer other similar features.

"At the end of the day, when people say 'building a phone' they actually can mean very different things," Zuckerberg said.
